Local 212 leaders and the 212 Retiree Chapter joined forces with daughter Jill Gilmore and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority sisters of the late Gloria Ford Gilmer, PhD to obtain a special street sign designation on MATC’s Milwaukee campus to honor Dr. Gilmore’s contributions to mathematics, the City of Milwaukee, and beyond.

Dr. Gilmore was a longtime MATC math instructor and 212 member, an accomplished mathematician, researcher, educator, role model, mentor, and woman of many “firsts”:

  • First black woman to earn a PhD from the School of Education at Marquette University

  • First black high school math instructor at Milwaukee Public Schools

  • First black math instructor at MATC (14 years in the 1960's and 70's)

  • First black woman mathematician to have her research papers archived at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC

We'll keep you updated as Dr. Gilmore’s honorary street sign designation story unfolds.
