Recertification FAQs

This year’s Recertification begins April 10!

What is Recertification?

  • Recertification is the annual, state mandated process, required of public sector unions in Wisconsin. More than 50% of each bargaining unit at MATC must vote YES to continue union representation. Represented Bargaining Unit Members can vote online (organization ID WERC) or by phone

Who needs to vote to recertify?

  • All represented in each bargaining unit need to vote YES to recertify. Those who do not vote will automatically be counted as a NO vote for union representation. More than 50% of each bargaining unit at MATC must vote YES to continue union representation.

What “Organization ID” do I enter to vote?

  • The ID you enter is: WERC

I don’t have a Voting Pin number, can I still vote in this year’s Recertification Election?

  • YES. You need to contact the WERC Helpdesk at 1-800-529-5218 to request your individual pin. If you do not vote, your vote will be counted as a NO for union representation at MATC.

What is a Bargaining Unit?

  • A Bargaining Unit is the representation group each MATC employee is a member of based on their area of employment at the college. AFT Local 212 consists of four bargaining units: Full Time Faculty, Part Time Faculty, Paraprofessionals and MPBS.

I stopped teaching at MATC, do I still need to vote?

  • YES! Faculty that have taught in any of the previous THREE semesters are still required to vote. In fact, if you do not vote, your vote will be counted as a NO for union representation at MATC.

I’m a dual-unit employee do I need to vote twice?

  • Yes. Any dual-unit employees should have received TWO separately mailed voting pin numbers and need to vote twice; once using each pin. If you only received one pin, please call 1-800-529-5218 to request your missing pin. Any votes you do not cast will automatically count as a NO vote for union representation.

I voted YES, does that make me a member of AFT Local 212?

  • By voting YES, you are voting to continue union representation at MATC. This means that AFT Local 212 will continue to represent you during wage and benefit negotiations. However, this does not make you an AFT Local 212 member and you will not have access to individual representation during disciplinary meetings, fact findings and other cases that may require representation–recovering lost or unpaid wages for example–and much more!
