PARAPROFESSIONALS

We expressed our concerns to, and were involved in regular monthly problem-solving meetings with, the EVP, VP of Learn, VP of HR, as well as additional committees and work teams. We also...

  • Advocated for several union members who faced possible disciplinary actions

  • Participated in and represented Local 212 at the NAACP Freedom Funding Dinner

  • Created opportunities for members and non-members to be heard through a listening session

  • Visited several members in their offices

  • Were involved in the creation of the FAST Fund consortium

  • Advocated and requested FWA’s to be a decision based on department needs

  • Represented members at the National AFT Conference in Boston, the AFL-CIO Conference in Madison and with Voces de La Frontera.

PART TIME FACULTY

In fall 2022 there were several teachers who were either not paid for teaching long term substitute work, or paid incorrectly.

  • Local 212 solved 16 out of the 17 cases; including a resolution that recovered about $21,000 for one instructor.

Near the end of the fall semester there was a PTF Forum where members discussed their concerns including:

  • A supervisor changing hours worked after the fact--this is not allowed and Local 212 was able to prevent it from happening

  • Concerns about longevity not being followed for class assignments

FULL TIME FACULTY

Here are examples of what we were able to accomplish with your support in fall 2022:

  • Called out gaps, gaffs, and procedures violations in faculty recruitment and hiring practices.

  • Won pre-census date adjustments on student withdrawal processes (work continues for timeframe thereafter).

  • Won involvement in identification of FT faculty salary comparator schools as part of seat-at-the-table for the Compensation Study Revisit

  • Defended faculty ownership of the curriculum.

  • Led update of multiple sections of the Faculty Appendix

  • Represented FT faculty interests on other key committees, including Employee Handbook, Benefits, Student Success integration, Learn Pillar Integration, Learn Pillar Integration, Achieving the Dream, Health & Safety, etc.

  • Played integral role in sensible adjustments made to FQAS requirements and processes.

  • Called out violations of Shared Governance.

  • Provided educational resources about and advice related to educating students about the importance of elections and voting.  

  • Assisted faculty colleagues with course assignment, load, schedule, FQAS, credentials, pay, leave, benefits, retirement, and a myriad of other questions and issues.

  • Helped revise language and implementation of excess prep.

  • Revised 309 Rule to meet faculty needs. 

  • Clarified FT load limit is met after 90%. 

  • Revised and standardized Team Teaching.

  • Tying Lead Faculty and Zancil together. Movement has been made toward equality through 212 and non-212 collaboration via the Zancil Calculators, but this is an ongoing process.

  • Counseled members mired in unwarranted student complaint proceedings and sought remedy to prevent such occurrences.

  • Ensured due process and fair treatment for members involved in fact-finding, discipline proceedings, and other processes with discipline potential.

HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE

  • Based on faculty and employee concerns, the Local 212 Health and Safety Committee asked for Fragrance / Environmental Sensitivity language to be added to the MATC Employee and MATC Student handbooks. The Public Health committee and Air Quality committees agreed to the importance of the addition of Fragrance / Environmental Sensitivity language to provide a safe environment. The process continues to move forward.

  • We also regularly participated, and engaged in, the monthly MATC Public Health Committee; including advocating for clear, concise guidelines for a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty and staff. Regular updates to Local 212 members for clarification of guidelines and resources.

  • In addition, the Local 212 Health and Safety Committee initiated several meetings with administrators from MATC Legal, Community Based Organizations and High School Relations to discuss including language in all contracts and agreements for a safe environment at offsite locations. Any faculty or staff member with concerns about the health and safety of any offsite learning environment, please reach out to the Health and Safety Committee.
