Local 212 Pushes Back on Zancil Load Cuts

Local 212 leaders met with MATC on Friday, August 25 in an emergency session to address unexpected, last-minute cuts made to fall faculty ancillary load (Zancil) assignments. The abruptly implemented load reductions were egregious given that the fall term was well underway leaving those in Zancil-supported assignments little choice on how to proceed.

As of August 28, we have been informed that those cuts have been placed on hold, for now.

In a follow-up letter, Local 212 leaders called for keeping the restoration of Zancil assignments for at least the remainder of the fall term and called for collaborative discussions regarding Zancil-related issues to begin immediately–especially if some adjustments might be needed for the spring term–with the right people at the table to ensure that smart and well-vetted decisions are made. The letter further emphasized that because of the diverse, far-reaching nature of Zancil assignments, decisions should only be made after the scope and complexity of the Zancil-supported work is fully understood. Also that thoughtful consideration be given to what implications reductions of load will have, not only on the employees involved, but also on the functioning/viability of college departments and programs (WTCS requirements, accreditation, etc.), as well as the experience and success of our students.
