Registration and Voter Identification
Helpful Tips from the City of Milwaukee Election Commission
Be sure to bring an acceptable form of photo ID with you to your voting site. Remember, a photo ID issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs is now acceptable. Other frequently used IDs include a Wisconsin Drivers’ License, a DOT-issued ID, a U.S. Passport, a uniformed service ID card, and a student ID with a program plan or financial aid statement. The address on your photo ID does not need to be current for photo ID purposes. Out-of-state drivers’ licenses are not acceptable. See a list of all acceptable photo IDs and restrictions.
If you need to register to vote on Election Day because you have changed your name or address, and the address on your photo ID is not current, you will need to bring an acceptable proof of residence document with you. Acceptable documents include a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, lease, tax bill, or document issued to you by a unit of government. You may show a paper copy or digital version of your proof of residence document.
If you have not voted for a while, you may want to confirm your voter registration status by reviewing your record at the My Vote website. Select “My Voter Info” and enter your name and birthdate to review your registration record.
Confirm your voting site and preview your ballot and ballot instructions
If you are a student and intend to use your student ID as your photo ID, you will also need to bring a document that proves you are currently enrolled. Your student ID must also include the date the ID was issued, an expiration date, and your signature in order to be acceptable.
Help Your Students Make a Voting Plan
Ask them the following questions. Better yet, turn these questions into an assignment--for extra credit!
Are you registered and do you have the correct forms of ID?
Are you voting in by ballot box, in-person early, or on election day?
Do you know where your polling location is? If not, check the city of Milwaukee website, or with their town's municipality.
Can you get to the polls? If you need transportation, you can contact Souls to the Polls, get discount coupons from Lyft or Uber, and if you are over 60 or have a disability, you can get a free ride from Milwaukee County Department of Aging.
Are you prepared to stand in line?
Do you want to see what's on your ballot?
