AFT Convention 2024 - Bara Omari

This is a first look at Local 212 leaders' experience at the AFT Convention 2024. The event took place over four days in Houston this summer.

Bara Omari was one of 2024's Local 212 attendees. Read her experience below:

This was my first time attending an AFT Convention. The experience was refreshing. I was excited to be a part of the energy around resolutions, fight for funding for higher education and safe staffing for healthcare workers. One thing that stood out was the number of resources, grants, and networks we have access to through AFT. I spent a lot of time connecting with people and networks at the various booths. AFT provides a lot of resources, networking, and support that would be beneficial to many of us in Local 212. Some of the takeaways:

  • The health and safety committee provides free onsite training and consultation for members.

  • Collaborations with groups like the Parents Circle, learning to bridge our differences in war, finding solidarity in heartbreak, and working to seek restorative justice and reconciliation. They offer a facilitator's guide

  • First Book:  They work to eliminate barriers by providing grants for books in low-income communities.

One of the highlights was also meeting and connecting with colleagues from all over the world who share similar beliefs and advocate for the same rights and freedoms we should all have. While even in a group of people who share similar beliefs, we found ourselves divided in resolutions and bills.

One of the themes was around "badass" union leaders. We got to hear from a few, including UAW President Shawn Fein, who described their winning formula as “Unite the membership, unite the working class, fight like hell and let everyday working-class people lead our movement.” Another speech that stood out to me was that of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. He made points on the importance of partnering with our local politicians to advance policies that positively impact the lives of people like us and our students.

Attending the convention proved to be an enriching and inspiring experience, one that has left a lasting impact on my perspective, professional, and personal growth. The opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals allowed for meaningful connections and exchanges of ideas. The vibrant atmosphere brimmed with enthusiasm and creativity, which made the overall experience enjoyable and memorable. Being part of a community that shared a common goal of learning and growth created a sense of belonging that I hope we can bring to Local 212 every day.
