Local 212 at the Bay View Massacre Commemoration

Local 212 member Alan Chavoya (pictured above) spoke at this year's commemoration for the Bay View massacre. The massacre took place on May 5, 1886 when labor protesters marching for an 8-hour workday approached the Rolling Mill in Bay View and were fired upon by National Guardsmen. Seven protesters, including a 13 year old boy were killed as a result. The massacre is commemorated every year in Bay View and serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by those supporting the rights of workers, and the labor movement's history here in Milwaukee.
