Former MATC Instructor and Milwaukee Author Martha Bergland

Martha was an instructor at MATC for more than 20 years. She is a successful writer, and in 2021 her book, The Bird Man of Koshkonong: The Life of Naturalist Thure Kumlienwas, was named by the Wisconsin Library Association as Best Work of Nonfiction for 2021 and the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Board of Curators Book of Merit for that year. Looking back at her time as an instructor, she is thankful for her students, her amazing coworkers and for having union representation. She attributes Local 212 with helping her achieve the time to write through two sabbaticals, as well as the class-and-step system, which allowed her to focus on her classes without having to worry about pay or status.
