Local 212 Presents MATC Reads

Book bans have come to Wisconsin and local school districts are at the forefront of this attempt to limit freedom of thought. Proposed bills in the state legislature underscore the urgency to act in support of intellectual freedom and in opposition of efforts to limit access to literature that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. As members of the educational community, it is incumbent upon us to consider the ramifications for our current and future students, some of which are articulated in this Inside Higher Education article.

Local 212’s Racial and Social Justice Committee invites MATC students, faculty, and staff to join us for Local 212/MATC Reads
–a book club celebrating banned books. Our fall 2023 semester pick is Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, a perennial book ban favorite and subject of the upcoming “Broadway in Milwaukee” presentation of To Kill a Mockingbird, which runs from November 7-12 at the Marcus Center. Tickets are still available (see more in the benefits section below!) Join us in reading or rereading the novel, attending the play, watching the film, inviting students to read with us, and participating in a December book discussion. Visit your nearest MATC librarylocal library, Boswell Books or other independent bookstore to access a copy. Further details will be shared in future 212 Tuesday communications.

The 212 Racial and Social Justice Committee is seeking committee members. We meet once a month.
Please see our committee scope for more information.
