Election Wins! There is Power in a Union!

Thanks so much to Local 212 members and especially those who contribute to 212 COPE.

Last night you played a big role in proving that democracy works even when some forces try to rig the results.

As COPE-supported and victorious Supreme Court Justice Jill Karofsky said last night, “Nobody in this state or in this country should have been forced to choose between their safety and participating in an election.“

But Jill Karofsky won despite her opponents in the state legislature and on the Supreme Court trying to defeat her by refusing the rational and safe course of delaying the election and allowing an all-mail vote.

Another huge victory: Local 212/MATC Retired Part-Time Instructor Joe Czarnecki will join 212’s own Steve Shea on the Milwaukee County Board.

And of course the King of Doors, Supervisor Steve Shea, was elected to another term with no opposition.

COPE – meaning you – had almost a clean sweep. Here are all the victorious races you supported, contributed to and volunteered for:

Wisconsin Supreme Court Jill Karofky

Circuit Court 5 Brett Bloome
Circuit Court 29 Rebecca Kiefer
County Board District 4 Ryan Clancy
County Board District 5 Marcelia Nicholson
County Board District 8 Steve Shea
County Board District 11 Joe Czarnecki

MPS Referendum YES
Milwaukee Comptroller Aycha Sawa
Common Council District 1 Ashanti Hamilton
Common Council District 14 Marina Dimitrijevic

Shorewood School Board Pablo Muirhead

South Milwaukee School Board Sarah Brooks, Patrick Hintz, Augie Vega
Greenfield School Board Rob Hansen

The huge disappointment of the night was Chris Larson’s razor-thin loss for Milwaukee County Executive. Larson came within half a percentage point despite being greatly outspent by Chris Abele’s and Betsy DeVos’ PACs. However, we will try to work closely with David Crowley to appoint MATC Board members who genuinely care about our students and are not hand-picked by the anti-public education Greater Milwaukee Association of Commerce.
